The team of Drama Theatre “Nikola Vaptsarov” – Blagoevgrad is excited to announce the implementation of a project for the creation of a large-scale multidisciplinary performance "Blood Wedding" based on the play by Federico García Lorca. The project is supported under the programme “Creation and Distribution – Large Projects 2025” of the National Culture Fund, under contract registration number № SRGP-T-2025-2 18/11/2025
“Blood Wedding” is a project that places at its core the encounter between dramatic text, contemporary dance, live music, and a powerful visual environment. At its foundation lies one of Lorca’s most recognisable plays — a work about love, fate, honour, blood memory, and the impossibility of escaping one’s own passions.
The performance will be created by an international creative team, with director and choreographer Philip Petkovski from North Macedonia, composer Peter Dundakov from Bulgaria, scenographer Martin Manev from North Macedonia, and costume designer Antonia Guginska from North Macedonia. The project will feature actors from the troupe of Drama Theatre “Nikola Vaptsarov” – Blagoevgrad, professional musicians and performers, as well as students specialising in the performing arts. The production will combine theatre, contemporary dance, folklore motifs, live music performed by a choir and guitarists, and a vivid stage vision.
The project aims to develop a new, authentic stage language through the synthesis of text, movement, and music. Through this approach, Drama Theatre “Nikola Vaptsarov” – Blagoevgrad expands the genre scope of its repertoire policy and opens up a space for dialogue between different stage practices, aesthetics, and audiences.
The main objective of the project is to create a large-scale, spectacular, and contemporary theatre and dance performance, realised in collaboration between artists from Bulgaria and North Macedonia. This multidisciplinary approach is significant both for the development of the theatre’s artistic ensemble and for attracting new audiences through contemporary, accessible, and impactful stage content.
A special emphasis within the project is placed on access to culture and the inclusion of diverse audiences. For each scheduled performance on the theatre’s own stage and within the tour, the theatre will provide 30 invitations for disadvantaged peopleincluding people with disabilities, socially vulnerable, minority, and isolated groups.
After the performances, audience discussions are planned, creating an opportunity for direct dialogue with the director, actors, and creative team. They are aimed at encouraging active cultural participation, introducing audiences to different genres, styles, and stage forms, as well as facilitating an encounter with professional performing arts that address themes of universal human significance.
The implementation of the “Blood Wedding” project will contribute to expanding the theatre’s repertoire profile, enhancing the professional and creative capacity of the acting troupe, attracting new audiences, and establishing lasting partnerships with local organisations and international artists.
