The name Medea easily conjures the image of a screaming monster from Antiquity — a child-killer driven by madness and revenge. Yet Euripides brings Medea’s experience uncomfortably close to each of us. His Medea is not a mythic demon but a deeply human woman, facing a trial too great to bear. She fears the ultimate humiliation — one that, for her, equals annihilation. Her decision is extreme, yet far from unheard of in today’s world. We tend to think that what she does is purely emotional, irrational, but in fact, her horrifying act follows a terrifyingly clear logic. Perhaps her story stands as a timely warning to us — the inhabitants of a world increasingly ruled by the efficiency of algorithms and artificial intelligence — that we must at all costs preserve our sanity and simple decency. For logic is a good servant, but a bad master.
