The Serbian National Theatre and Jernej Lorenci open the Balkan Theatre Festival 2025 in Blagoevgrad with “The Gospel According to F. M. Dostoevsky.”

The 4th edition of the Balkan Theatre Festival will open on 1st November in Blagoevgrad with the performance The Gospel According to F. M. Dostoevsky OF Serbian National Theatre in Novi Sadstaged by one of the most important European directors today - Jernej Lorenci.

The Gospel According to F. M. Dostoevsky a poetic stage puzzlethat weaves together key motifs and fragments from Dostoevsky’s works (Crime and Punishment, Karamazovi Brothers, Demons, The Insulted and Injured). Lorenci turns the text into stage ritual —with the rhythm of breathing, alternating silence and outbursts, minimalism and powerful physical presence. Instead of playing characters, the actors tell and live their stories, inviting the audience in a space of thinking, faith and empathy.

Jernej Lorenci is one of the most famous European directors —a Slovenian director, teacher, and sought-after guest on major stages and international festivals. Among his most notable works are The Iliad, The Dead Man Comes for His Beloved, and Orpheus (NT "Ivan Vazov", 2002) - multiple award-winningHe works as a researcher, gathering his team around an idea that gradually begins to “breathe” on stage. The Balkan Theatre Festival brings together outstanding companies and directors from Bulgaria, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Romania to showcase the most powerful and innovative theatrical explorations of the region.

From November 1 to 7, Blagoevgrad will become a stage for cultural dialogue and theatrical experimentation, featuring one performance each evening and a series of special accompanying events.
