"The Marriage" by Gogol – Opening the Theatrical Year at "Nikola Vaptsarov" Drama Theater in Blagoevgrad

On January 15, the "Nikola Vaptsarov" Drama Theater in Blagoevgrad welcomed its audience with the premiere of the play "The Marriage" by N.V. Gogol, directed by Rostislav Georgiev. The event marked a triumphant beginning of the new theatrical year, setting high expectations for the upcoming cultural season.

The production is directed by Rostislav Georgiev, winner of the 2023 Young Directors’ Contest at the Balkan Theater Festival. His work with the Blagoevgrad theater ensemble elevated "The Marriage" beyond its usual social satire context, focusing not only on the archetypes but also on the real people behind them, with all their flaws, dreams, and longings.

Traditionally staged as a comedy of manners mocking human vices and societal norms, this new rendition by the "Nikola Vaptsarov" Drama Theater takes on a universal significance. Gogol's exploration of themes such as love, loneliness, and the quest for identity remains just as relevant for contemporary audiences, transcending the era in which it was written.

The premiere was met with thunderous applause, with the audience expressing their admiration for the actors' skillful performances and the captivating visual design by Nikol Trendafilova.
