The play "The Marriage" is most often staged as a comedy of characters, mocking certain human vices, or as a social satire that comments on the petty bureaucratic cowardice and the inability of a specific social class to recognize the higher dimensions of life. However, this play contains themes that can relate to the existence of any person, regardless of the era they live in or the social system they belong to. If stripped of the accumulated interpretations and imposed clichés over time, it can reveal pains and themes that are still valid and relevant for today's person. Such an interpretation places the focus on the individual— not the stereotype (the bureaucrat, the small man), not the classification of a person, but the living person with all their weaknesses, flaws, and fears, but also their virtues, dreams, and longings.
Marriage, in our context, will be explored from one perspective as an escape from a monotonous, meaningless life—a path toward giving it purpose, an opportunity for happiness, and self-discovery through the eyes of the other. On the other hand, it will be viewed as a trap for the individual—the terror of someone else invading the sacred, intimate space of the self, consuming and overwhelming the "I."
